Bridge Wardens’ Scholars
Every other year, the Rochester Bridge Trust grants two Bridge Wardens’ Scholarships which provide funding to young people who are interested in studying engineering at university and to their schools. Candidates are selected by the Trust’s partner, the Arkwright Scholarship Trust. Direct applications are not accepted. More information about applying for scholarships in Year 11 can be found here http://www.arkwright.org.uk/scholars/.
To be eligible for a scholarship, a pupil’s school must be affiliated to the Arkwright Scholarships Trust. The process of affiliation is quick, simple and free, and more information can be found here www.arkwright.org.uk/schools/. The Trust is keen to encourage schools within its grant making areas to affiliate to the Arkwright Scholarships Trust. Do contact the Trust if you represent a school and would like to hear more about the scheme from the Bridge Clerk or from one of the Bridge Wardens’ Scholars.
You can find out more about the current scholars here.
The Trust organises visits and engineering experiences for the scholars to help them with their studies. For example, a visit was arranged to the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge at Dartford, and the scholars have helped with learning workshops for younger children, demonstrating bridge building during Heritage Open Days. The Trust arranges for new scholars and their parents to receive a tour of the Institution of Civil Engineers and to have lunch with the Wardens and the Bridge Clerk.
The Trust encourages its scholars to share their enthusiasm for engineering by setting up activities within their schools, which the Trust supports by providing resources and speakers. On request the Trust supports careers events at the scholars’ schools, mentors scholars through the university application process, and seeks to help with finding work experience opportunities.
Once a two-year scholarship has ended, the Trust continues to stay in touch with the Bridge Wardens’ Scholars, providing mentoring and support to identify work experience opportunities.
