Engineering expert helps create children’s book

Children will soon have another way to be inspired to become engineers, with the publication of a book created with the help of the Chief Executive of the Rochester Bridge Trust.

Usborne’s Lift The Flap Engineering introduces inquisitive minds to some of the different strands of engineering, simply explaining the concepts with examples of real-world situations.

Sue Threader is known as the Bridge Clerk to the Trust and is also a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, which recommended her as an expert to Usborne. Sue initially provided the publisher with technical advice focused on civil engineering, before reviewing the completed book.

She said: “Engineering education and the encouragement of young children to understand the potential of this field are both particularly important, so I was pleased to be invited to support the publication of this Lift the Flap book.

“My work involved reviewing the engineering principles, helping to maintain accuracy while also ensuring each example is easily comprehensible by children who will have perhaps not previously encountered this subject matter. It was an enjoyable experience and I am looking forward to seeing the finished publication.”

The book covers a range of engineering topics, including building big with civil engineering; gadgets in electronic and software engineering; the mechanical engineering of machines; robotics; flight and aerospace engineering; biomedical engineering; green technology; and the sound and art of engineering for culture.

Rose Hall, author of the book, commented: “Lift the Flap Engineering gives children a chance to discover how the huge and varied field of engineering shapes the world around us.

“Sue Threader has been a great help in writing the book. She shared her detailed civil engineering expertise about bridges, skyscrapers and airports, as well as reviewing the whole book to make sure it was completely accurate while being accessible for children.

“Our Lift the Flap series has become a popular way of introducing science-related subjects to children aged seven and over.”

Lift the Flap Engineering will be available to buy from September 2018, in bookshops, as well as through Usborne’s website at: https://usborne.com/browse-books/catalogue/product/1/12737/lift-the-flap-engineering/. The ISBN number for the book is 9781474943659 and the RRP is £12.99.
