Esplanade investigations, ongoing review

It is very clear there is ongoing investigatory work being carried out on the Esplanade near the castle walls. However, sharp-eyed passers-by may also have noticed a depression in the flowerbeds by the river.

This marks the spot where a covered tube has been left in the ground, reaching 12m down to the main geological layers.

This temporary ‘well’ enables us to monitor ground water levels and also take samples. It is expected to be in place for another three to four months.

The tube and its cover begin about a foot below ground level, hence the appearance of a bowl-shaped dip in our otherwise normally beautifully level and manicured beds.
