Orchestra ONE Takes To The Stage

Young musicians from Kent and Medway will be taking to the stage at the New Line Learning Academy, Maidstone, for their second public performance as Orchestra ONE (Orchestra of New Experiences) – on Sunday, April 1.

An innovative two-year project sponsored by the Rochester Bridge Trust, Orchestra ONE is bringing young people with different abilities and a passion for music together with more experienced musicians to create new music inspired by the River Medway.

Kent Music and its project partner, the music education charity Rhythmix, presented the orchestra’s first concert with musical improvisations and compositions crafted by guest creative music director Tim Steiner on December 11. The second concert will feature compositions led by musical director Matt Wright.

Matt is a senior lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University where he leads the BA (Hons) Creative Music Technology degree and runs the urban music ensemble. Matt is also a composer, improviser and sound artist at the fringes of concert and club culture, and he has worked with numerous recording artists and ensembles, and with key music festivals.

The Orchestra ONE project is designed to combine the talents of young people aged 12 – 19 years in a range of musical traditions from classically trained violinists and flautists to producers, MCs and DJs. It specifically aims to attract young people who love music but have not had previous opportunities to perform with other musicians. The project is divided into four stages with each including three sets of workshops in Tonbridge, Maidstone and Medway, which then rehearse together in readiness for a public concert.
