Right turn closure off Rochester’s New Bridge

Motorists are advised there is to be a temporary closure of the right turn from the New Bridge onto Rochester Esplanade.

The traffic management will begin with a series of overnight closures from Wednesday, 21st August until Sunday, 25th August, from 9pm until 5am. The turn will then be closed day and night, from Tuesday, 27th August, until approximately the second week of September.

The works are part of the Rochester Bridge Refurbishment Project, and are to enable the removal of the final sections of the upstream parapet – including sealant, coping stones and steelwork – of the New Bridge. Concrete repairs, kerb work, core drilling and parapet installation will also take place at this time. This will be carried out by FM Conway, on behalf of the Rochester Bridge Trust.

Stuart Hercus, the Project Manager who is overseeing the works on behalf of Bridge Engineer Arcadis, explained: “One of the Rochester Bridge Trust’s main priorities is to minimise disruption to the public, and so these works have been planned so as much as possible can be carried out at one time on this area. We apologise for any inconvenience.”

On the first night of the closure a diversion will be implemented, with signage remaining in place throughout the works. To minimise impact on the nearby road network, motorists are asked to drive along Corporation Street and take the left turn onto Bardell’s Terrace, looping around through Furrell’s Road and back onto the A2/High Street, returning to the bridges to turn left onto Rochester Esplanade.
