Two full-time roles created at historic charity

One of the country’s oldest charities has taken on two new members of staff as it expands to meet the demands of a growing workload.

Ilona Hurrell has joined the Rochester Bridge Trust team as Contracts and Projects Manager, while Andrew Freeman recently became the new Operations Manager.

Sue Threader, the Bridge Clerk and Chief Executive, welcomed the new recruits: “The Trust is an ancient charity operating in a modern world. These newly-created positions are a part of our continuing evolution to meet the challenge of maintaining an historic piece of infrastructure according to the requirements of our historic covenants. It is a pleasure to welcome these two new, full-time, staff members to the team.”

Ilona brings her experience as a civil engineer to the role of Contracts and Projects Manager. A significant part of her work will involve the overall project management of the multi-million pound refurbishment of Rochester’s bridges.

She said: “As a self-confessed bridge-hugger, I have a keen personal interest in UK bridges and their history, as well as having worked on a number of significant structures around the world, so I’m particularly excited to be taking on this new role.

“I trained as a graduate engineer working for the organisation that is the Bridge Engineer to the Trust, so I look forward to re-establishing my connections there.”

Ilona’s previous work includes acting as Structures Lead for the client on the Mersey Gateway Crossing and providing an independent design check for the Izmit Bay (Ozman Gazi) Suspension Bridge.

Formerly manager of the Guildhall Museum and Visitor Centre, Andrew has long been a part of Rochester’s community. He also has experience of industrial modelmaking, architecture and advertising.

Taking on the new role of Operations Manager, Andrew will support the Chief Finance Officer in the running of the office and overseeing of grant projects. His previous experience is also being capitalised on as he manages the design and installation of an upcoming exhibition in Rochester Cathedral Crypt.

Andrew added: “I am looking forward to working with my new colleagues, exploring new connections for the Trust and helping to further its links with the community.”
