Enforced closures of Rochester bridges

To facilitate Medway Council’s resurfacing works in Strood, there will be two overnight closures of the approach roads to the Rochester bridges.

On Monday, 14th March, there will be no access to either bridge between Rochester and Strood from 9pm until 5.30am. Then on Tuesday, 15th March, access to the Old Bridge carrying traffic from Rochester to Strood will be closed from 9pm until 5.30am.

A signed diversion will be in place, directing vehicular traffic through the A289 Medway Tunnel where necessary. Pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridges.

The closures are to enable Medway Council to complete the resurfacing works carried out in Strood last October. While the work is carried out the Rochester Bridge Trust will use the enforced closures as an opportunity to carry out its own programme of maintenance.

This work will include repair of degraded material, fixing potholes, pro-active maintenance to seal road surface joint material and re-painting road markings.

Tim Belcher-Whyte, one of the bridge engineers for the Rochester Bridge Trust, explained: “We plan to use the unavoidable closures of access to the bridges by Medway Council as an opportunity to carry out essential maintenance of our own. This doubling up of works has been scheduled to minimise delays to the travelling public.”

The bridge maintenance work will be carried out by F M Conway.
